ICC Officially Sanctions Nepal Premier League Ahead of NPL Season 3

The International Cricket Council has officially sanctioned the Nepal Premier League ahead of its third season. CAN confirmed the approval on October 16, 2026, just days before NPL Season 3 begins on October 26. The recognition strengthens the league’s international standing and removes a major regulatory hurdle for franchises recruiting overseas players.

ICC Grants Official Sanction to Nepal Premier League

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially sanctioned the Nepal Premier League (NPL), marking a major milestone for Nepal's rapidly growing franchise cricket competition.

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) confirmed the approval on October 16, 2026, ahead of the third edition of the tournament. NPL Season 3 is scheduled to run from October 26 to November 21, 2026.

CAN said the ICC recognition is expected to contribute to the development and expansion of Nepali cricket while strengthening the international identity of Nepal's premier domestic franchise tournament.

What Does ICC Sanction Mean for the NPL?

ICC sanction means the Nepal Premier League is recognized as an approved cricket event under the ICC's regulations.

This is particularly important for franchise tournaments hosted by ICC Associate Members such as Nepal. Under ICC regulations, additional ICC approval is required for certain domestic competitions involving more than four current or recently active players from Full Member countries.

With the sanction now secured, the NPL has cleared an important regulatory requirement for bringing a larger number of established international cricketers into the tournament.

More Overseas Players Can Join NPL

One of the biggest immediate benefits of the ICC sanction is expected to be greater flexibility for NPL franchises when recruiting overseas players.

Before the official approval arrived, several franchises had been waiting for clarity before completing or publicly announcing some of their international signings.

Foreign players will still need the required permissions and No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from their respective cricket boards where applicable, but the ICC sanction removes a major league-level hurdle.

This could allow NPL Season 3 to attract more active international players and increase the overall quality and global profile of the competition.

Does ICC Sanction Give NPL Official T20 Status?

ICC sanction and official match classification are related but are not exactly the same thing.

The sanction confirms that the NPL is recognized as approved cricket under ICC regulations. However, the classification of matches for official statistical purposes, including whether performances are recorded under recognized T20 classifications, is governed separately by the ICC's rules on the classification of official cricket.

Therefore, ICC sanction should not by itself be interpreted as an automatic declaration that every NPL match has received official T20 status unless that classification is separately confirmed.

A Major Step for Nepal Cricket

The approval represents another major step in the growth of professional cricket in Nepal.

Since its launch, the Nepal Premier League has attracted strong crowds, international players and growing commercial interest. ICC recognition could further improve the league's credibility among overseas players, cricket boards, sponsors and broadcasters.

CAN Secretary Paras Khadka had previously indicated that the board had received positive feedback from the ICC but was waiting for formal written approval before making an announcement.

That confirmation has now arrived just ahead of Season 3, providing a major boost to the tournament before the opening match.

NPL Season 3 Begins October 26

The third edition of the Nepal Premier League will begin on October 26 and continue until November 21, 2026.

Eight franchise teams will once again compete for the championship, with Lumbini Lions entering the season as defending champions.

With ICC sanction now secured and several high-profile overseas signings expected, NPL Season 3 is set to be one of the most internationally significant editions of the tournament so far.
